Somatic Experiencing

– Healing through the body's built-in intelligence

Somatic Experiencing® is a powerful, body-based method for releasing deep stress, shock and trauma, developed by Dr. Peter Levine. Unlike traditional talk therapy, where we often try to understand our problems through the intellect, SE works "bottom-up" – focusing on the nervous system and the physical sensations of the body.

Why do stress and trauma get stuck in the body?

Peter Levine found inspiration for SE by studying wild animals. A prey animal that survives an attack physically shakes off the enormous survival energy (fight/flight/freeze) and quickly returns to a state of calm. We humans are equipped with the same biological system, but our highly developed brain – our intellect and our thoughts – often steps in and (sometimes necessarily) blocks this natural discharge. When the survival energy has no outlet, it locks into the nervous system and can lead to chronic stress, anxiety, burnout or physical pain.

A meeting beyond the story

Somatic Experiencing and the non-dual approach meet in a very natural way. In SE we don't need to dig into old memories or repeat painful stories about why we feel the way we do. We are less interested in the mind's "story" and more in the raw sensations of the body.

We also start from the principle that there is nothing wrong with you. Your system is not broken – it is only carrying unresolved energy. The wholeness is already there, just beneath the surface.

How does it work in practice?

During a session we work very slowly and attentively. Instead of becoming overwhelmed by what is difficult, we learn to build the body's capacity to stay with the sensations:

  • We move awareness from spinning thoughts down into what is actually felt in the body.
  • We pendulate between places in the body that feel tense or uncomfortable and places that feel neutral or safe.
  • We meet the trapped emotions and experiences exactly as they are, with pure, non-judging presence.
  • When the nervous system feels safe enough to let go of the bound energy, a natural reorganisation happens. Tension releases, the separation between body and mind decreases, and we land back in our natural rhythm, vitality and presence.
